What can I say…this girl has such a wonderful gift. She has the gift of gab and the gift of heart. Porsche Smith, a 26 year old soul singer from Oakland,CA now residing in Dallas,TX, knows the art of performing and constructing an album. However, despite all of her energy and determination, it seems her music has not reach a wider audience yet. Porsche is not only a skillfull singer, but plays guitar and keys as well. I met Porsche Smith back in 2006 while living in West Oakland,CA. I wondered WHY was she trying to sing back up for me when she had so much going for her. It just made me realize how wonderful she was inside and out as well as a dope musician/vocalist. All didn’t end there for her though. She just recently won the John Legend Remix Contest sponsored by Ourstage and was lucky to play her version of John Legend’sEverybody Knows” at Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood,Florida. Porsche not only resung John Legends song, but she produced it as well, playing only acoustic guitar. Porsche has also opened up for Geno Young and PJ Morton, to name a few. She released her debut album About Life in 2007 which was very much Porsche and depicted some experiences in LIFE that some of us can say we have come across. About Life receive great reviews. As time progressed, so did Porsche‘s music. She released a three song EP entitled Loveland which is the polar opposite from About Life and is a burst of Pop and Electro. This EP was released earlier this year and shows Porsche‘s growth as an artist and her ability to step out of the box people like to put soulful artists in these days . Loveland is available on iTunes and is still available as is About Life. Currently, Porsche is working on a new project and doing shows with her all-female (yes! all female) band Beauty and The Beats who is awesome by the way. If you are not up on Porsche Smith, this is a very good time to do so. She is the epitome of soul sista #1.

For as long as I’ve been living in Atlanta,GA, I’ve noticed a pattern in want to be hipster/alternative artists; yet, out of all that catastrophe, I’ve found an artist who is very
much a sleeper and needs to be the center of attention. Dezaray Dawn, an R&B/Electro/Broken-beat singer, born in Germany and a certified army brat, is a talented individual and deserves recognition. She would consider herself to be a self-described gypsy being that she has soared the different parts of the world during half of her lifetime. With that being said, it shows how diverse Dezaray‘s music happens to be. Much like myself, Dezaray is an MTV baby. She grew up emulating artist she viewed on her tv screen such as Prince,Michael Jackson (R.I.P), and Madonna. However, she notes Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and Natalie Cole as inspirations. It doesn’t surprise me that Dezaray is a versatile artist considering the fact that her cousin is Anthony David, as are Sean Stockman of Boyz II Men and TamekaTinyCottle of X-Scape, who are all different in their right. Dezaray‘s sound is a sound that is sort of familiar, taking you to a place of Soul II Soul, Loose Ends, and Fertile Ground. At this moment, Dezaray is on the verge releasing her EP Chameleon. The Chameleon EP consists of songs like “Can’t Look Away“and self-title track “Chameleon” which are both my favorite and also, in my opinion, tell the story of what the artist is dealing with in life. Dezaray currently sings background with me every now and then and she has a very melodic voice and I am happy to say that we collaborate together. Dezaray and I talk frequently and she is more than excited to let the world hear what she has to offer. Hopefully, the world is ready for her and the message that she is sent to give. I am.

This girl is the epitome of new millennium soul singer. She has been putting in much work, so much for others like Common, Foreign Exchange, etc. that she put her on album Oscillations:Triangle on hold. Well, Muhsinah just recently brought to my attention that tomorrow is her birthday, and instead of giving her a gift, she is giving her fans a gift. She is releasing Oscillations:Square tonight at 12am which includes a lot of “gems” that may only be available through digital so get it while it’s hot! And if you don’t believe me, get it from the horses mouth 😉

Happy Birthday Muhsinah! (July 20)

Foreign Exchange: TAWIAH

April 29, 2009

Over the years, Europe has produced some of the most talented artists. When you think of Europe soul, you think instantly of Soul II Soul,Heatwave, and Amy Winehouse; to name a few. However, when I think of an inspiring act from the soul genre to follow from Europe, I think of Beverly Tawiah. She goes by the moniker TAWIAH and she is a dope singer hailing from London,UK. Tawiah is a very corky and interesting soul singer. She possesses so much soul yet her lyrics and music are fun. Although she is not well known in the States,Tawiah is no stranger to exposure and notoriety. She has worked and performed with big names in the UK such as producer Mark Ronson and Mark De Clive-Lowe. Tawiah gives praises to her inspirations such Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo, and Erykah Badu. The 20 something year old singer/songwriter released her Ep In Jodi’s Bedroom and has turned heads in the underground and is a must have. With comical and Cameo sounding songs like “Another One” and the electro-soul sounding “Broken Hearted“, you’d wish this six song EP wouldn’t leave you hanging. I’m sure there is an album in the making. For now, we’ll just have to chill and enjoy the rhythm’s and sounds of what’s offered.
